Your First Day

Your first day will be a normally be a Monday and you should arrive at 8:30am. If Monday is a Public Holiday in New Zealand, your orientation day will be on Tuesday. You can check New Zealand Public Holidays here.

Southern Lakes English College is located in the Remarkables Park complex.

If you live far from the school, you can take a bus to Remarkables Park. For more information on the bus timetables click here. Once you get there, come to SLEC Reception on level 2, we will be there waiting for you.

Presenting Your Documents

Our Student Services Team will greet you at Reception and aid you through Orientation. You will need to bring your passport, visa and medical insurance.

  • We will check the validity and expiry date of your documents and make copies of them for our file. This is very important; you won’t be able to start your classes without the correct documents. You can find more information here or send us an email to studentservices@slec.ac.nz so we can verify them in advance;

  • You will sign the Conditions of Enrolment and complete the contact details form;

  • You will receive a SIM card with a New Zealand cell phone number.

Placement Test

All students will take a placement test on their first day. This is a short verbal test that will test your conversational English. Our Academic Team will then advise which is the most appropriate level for you to start in and assign you to your class.

Orientation

During orientation, you will receive a warm welcome and our team will explain to you what to expect during your course at SLEC. We will also give you information about Queenstown and life in New Zealand. You will then need to sign a ‘Student Acknowledgement Form’. You will also receive information on New Zealand legislation and where to seek help if you need it during the course.

We will also go for a short walking tour around the school. Our team will show you the most important places that you need to know like the location of classes, student common areas and reception.

Job Club

If you are thinking about working in New Zealand, you will also have the option of attending our weekly Job Club to learn all about working in New Zealand as a student. You will receive information on the following:

  • How to open a bank account

  • How to create your IRD number

  • New Zealand employment rights and obligations

  • How to create your CV and Cover Letter

  • Where to look for a job

  • Some tips!
